WKA, WISHAW

It was a frosty journey through to Wishaw for the WKA Open Qualifier Competition. Patrick was our solitary fighter from the kickboxing. He was joined by Gary from the Krav Maga class who had been dared, bullied and coersed into taking part in the competition by his daughters (who were also competing with their Karate club).

Gary was first up to fight and did exceptionally well for his first competition losing by a small margin to a more experienced fighter. Still for someone who doesn't train specifically for competition fighting it was a respectable performance.

Patrick was next on the mats and fought and won his first fight. The second round was a tough call fighting Colin Ritchie. He fought well but was well beaten by a far more experienced competitior. Thinking that was him done for the day Patrick had his jacket on when he was called to fight the third place fight off. Profanities ensued whilst kitting up but we think it was worth getting back on the mats for this...

DAY OUT RATHO

I didn't know quite what to expect at Ratho today. Yeah I know that sounds daft, "you booked the place", you cry, bemused. But you see, that's the thing when you look at these adrenaline-raising events from the comfort of a lap top - you do tend to downscale in your own head the fact that you'll are going to have to step off a perfectly good bit of floor into...nothing. If I can take something from today it's that 100 feet IS a very long way down, even on a website.

Congratulations on another 100% pass rate for the krav students at last Sundays grading. After a tough 3 hour seminar and a tougher 3 hour grading they came through with flying colours, showing excellent technical ability and great fighting skills.

No negatives from the performance and one student (no names) got the accolade from examiner Joe Ambrosino of being "very,very good". Well done to everybody and its only 6 months till the next one.

Based right in the centre of Glasgow this is an excellent competition and the final outing for 2008. As usual the fighters should meet in Woodmill Community Use car park With a late weigh-in we get a "lie-in" and meet at 9:30am. On a quiet Sunday morning the drive should take 50 minutes.

All those fighting will need full sparring kit: headguard, semi-contact and light-con gloves, gumshield, groin guard (male and females!), shin pads, foot pads.

(note: adult begineers light-con requires 16oz gloves)

SBBA 3 SERIES RESULTS

We headed north on Saturday with one of the biggest squads of fighters I think we may ever have taken to compete in a 3 Series competition. With 14 entries from Fife Kickboxing it was a busy day for our fighters representing all categories - Terriers, Teens and Adults.

Well done to Kieran Bell and David Sidey in the Terriers section. Though no medals were won there was a lot of fun and David fought well and reached the semi-finals. Kieran was brave enough to step forward and volunteer for the team event. It was a tough fight as he was up against a black belt but he fought well and managed a point.

In the teens section Ryan won the King Of The Ring and was 3rd in the Semi-Contact category. Aime brought home two 3rd place medal for Semi-Contact and Light-Continuous.

In the adult beginners section Calum "Zebidee" Young brought home 2nd place in the Light-Continuous and 3rd in the Semi-Contact categories.

As for Andy, Patrick and myself we ranked amongst the had-a-go crowd. Still you've gotta be in it to win it!

See you all in class for plenty of sparring practice for the IAKSA competiton in Glasgow on the 23rd November.

KRAV MAGA CLASS - 11th NOVEMBER

For those persons who's first time it is travelling to the SBBA academy in Elgin please find below directions and a contact telephone number.

The instructors travelling to the competition are:

Craig, Morag and Tam. Craig can be contacted on 0773 4443839.

Younger fighters competing in the terriers event will need to leave Dunfermline no later than 0630hrs to arrive in time for the competition starting at 1030hrs.

Teenager and adult fighters are to meet at Woodmill Community Use car park at 0900hrs.

The cost of the competition entry is £15. This fee includes all categories, certificates and any medals or trophies won. The "fighters fund" will pay £5 per fighter as a subsidy to the cost of entry.

Please pay your entry fee to one of the three instructors attending the competition.

KICKBOXING FITNESS CLASS

Abbeyview Community Centre

Thanks to everyone who has been asking about the return of the kickboxing fitness class.

We are pleased to be able to say that we will be starting a weekly class at the Abbeyview Community Centre on a Thursday evening. The facilities at the centre are excellent and there a fantastic big hall to allow us to expand on the routines developed over the summer months.

This is a non-contact fitness class based on circuit training, pad work and skipping and it's open to everyone! The class is ideal for anyone who would like to train for fighting fitness (without the fighting). There is no requirement to join the kickboxing class or take part in any sparring.

All the exercises are scaleable - which means they can be done at all levels of fitness. You work at your own level of fitness and the person next to you at theirs. It's entirely up to you how hard you work - so you can "glow gently" or "go ballistic". Everyone can benefit and your fitness will increase week after week as you train.

The classes are great value at £4 per hour class* and attendance limited and by pre-booking only.

OCTOBER HOLIDAY VENUE CHANGES

Monday Nights

As usual Queen Anne High School Community Use closes for the October holidays. The school will be closed on Monday 13th October and Monday 20th October.

Meanwhile the nice people at Woodmill High School continue to work through the holidays and so the classes will relocate to Woodmill High School (Boys Gym) on these two weeks. Classes start at 7:00pm as usual.

WKA Open Competition, Wishaw

Sunday saw Fife Kickboxing take a small fighting squad to compete at the WKA Open Championships in Wishaw. As well as fighting, the competition gave us the chance to catch up with our Elgin friends & see some of Scotlands top fighters perform.

I know you're all desperate to know how it went, so here goes:

Ryan did very well, winning gold in both <60kg> (however, in his defence, his opponent not only won that category, but also came second only to Damon Samsun in the Men's Grand Champion event).

The next scheduled competition is in Elgin on the first weekend of November followed by the final IAKSA comp of the year at the end of November.

JINGLE BELLS, BATMAN SMELLS...

Ho, ho, ho!!

The Christmas night out has been booked for Friday 12th December at Taurasi Italian Restaurant, Dunfermline (opposite the Fire Station). The table is booked for 7:30pm.

There are 20 places available and you can book your place on this festive night out by paying a £5 deposit. (The deposit goes towards the cost of your meal). Bookings without a deposit will be considered provisional and will be "guzzumped" by another booking with a deposit. Also, we may be able to increase the numbers if required but this is by no means confirmed, so avoid disappointment and book early.

Over 18s can meet early from 7:00pm in the Brasshouse for a drink if they wish. Under 18s should go straight to the restaurant for 7:30pm.

TONY BLAUER PDR COMBATIVES CAMP

Charles and myself were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to train for 2 days with Tony Blauer and his team at the weekend at the first UK PDR Combatives Camp in Edinburgh.

Tony's PDR and SPEAR systems have been taught extensively to the US police and military and the basic principles have can be viewed in the video below.

We both thoroughly enjoyed the training and would lik to thank Tony and all his team for sharing their knowledge. Certainly, it is my opinion that the PDR weekend has been the single most important piece of hands on self defence training I have participated in.

FIGHTERS FUND BOOSTED

Thank you and well done to Charles and Joy, who raised £91 for the fighters fund at Sunday's car boot sale in Inverkeithing. The fund raiser wouldn't have been possible without the generosity of everyone who donated items for the sale. Thank you all.

We will hold another car boot, probably in October, when hopefully with the help of the students we can further boost the fund with a view to taking students to Dublin.

IAKSA BELLSHILL

Well done to the Fife Kickboxing fighters and a big thank you to the travelling supporters. The day went without hitch and we found the Sir Matt Busby Centre with only the most minor of detours.

Michael Dorren - 1st Beginners Men +85kg light continuous, 2nd Beginners Men +80kg semi-contact.

Kevin Riley - 1st Beginners Men +80kg semi-contact.

Kevin and Michael ended up fighting each other in the semi-contact final and it was a great fight that saw a 30 second extension and sudden death - twice! - as the first sudden death was a draw. What a cliffhanger! Well done lads.

So a good result for the lads. Ryan's semi-contact fight ended with a awesome turn over by James Taylor of SBBA. Ryan was ahead 3-2 with literally seconds to go. The fight re-started and James scored with a great hook kick to the head right at the death making the final score 4-3 to James. Well done "Hyperboy", unluck Ryan.

Hopefully we'll have some footage to upload shortly.

CHARLES AWARDED G2 INSTRUCTOR STATUS

Charles attended three days rigorous training and grading in London in his ongoing development as a Krav Maga Instructor.

KIDS CLASS NEW START TIME

The fighters travelling north for the 3 Series left a little later than usual and arrived around midday. With just enough time to stretch our legs and get changed we were straight into the Master Class for an hour of instruction by Lee Sansum and we'd all like to thank him for an excellent class.

The fighting started again after 2 o'clock and the afternoon passed in a buzz of fights and cheers of support. The Fife Kickboxing squad of 6 did really well and brought a bounty of trophies back down south.

FIGHTERS RETURN FROM DUBLIN

...not quite victoreous, but with big smiles on their faces! The instructors would like to congratulate Linda, Ryan and Andy for representing Fife Kickboxing and Compete Scotland at the largest kickboxing competition in Europe.

All three fighters held an excellent account of themselves and though no trophies were won it is with no disgrace as the best fighters in the world attend the Dublin Open.

It was a pleasure to spend time with other members of the Compete Scotland Association and to get the opportunity to get to know them a little better.

Only twelve months to train and get ready for the Dublin Open 2009!!

QUIZ NIGHT REVIEW

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Fund Raising Quiz night and made it a tremendous success.

Thank you also to Tappie Toories for the use of the room upstairs to host the quiz and to friendly bar staff. We should also thank Dougie for preparing the quiz questions.

Surprisingly the quiz ended with a three way draw between Charlies Angels, Wags & Slags and The Pack of 3. Charlies Angels bowed out gracefully having to leave the quiz. There then followed a three question head to head. DRAW! A further three questions were needed to seperate these two teams.

Wags & Slags bottled it! Having correctly answered "what is chromatics the study of?" - colours - they talked themselves out of it and changed their answer to genetics.

The purpose of the night was to raise some money for the newly established fighters fund. Thanks to all of you we raised £192! Thank you again for making the night a big success.

We are running a few fund raising events in the lead up to the Irish Open with a view to raising funds for the students who are travelling to compete. The instructors are committed to helping students, now and in the future, who wish to travel to compete in competitions and we will be reviewing the best way to provide this support.

CAR BOOT SALE
We will take a stall at the very popular weekly car boot sale held in Inverkeithing at some time in the middle of February.

In the lead up to that time and with that spring cleaning feeling upon you we ask that you bring us your old CDs, DVDs, VHS cassettes, books, magazines, toys, computer games, consoles, clothes and anything else you feel it is time you parted company with.

Please ask your parents, brothers & sisters, friends and neighbours if there is anything that they wish to contribute to the sale. Please don't delay. Bring everything to the classes where we will transport to our top secret and secure storage facility!!

The points movement is measured against your personal best (PB) and not necessarily the last bleep test taken.

Some great improvement there from some students. There's also some negative figures there as well but please don't be put off. The test result can vary depending on your health, water intake, tiredness etc. The important thing is that your result improve steadily over the year.

Sansum Black Belt Academy 3 Series National Championship Competition

What a great competition and a good result again for the Fife Kickboxing fighters.

Well done to everyone who attended. Asides from Ryan and David all of the competitors from FKSDA were taking part in their first competions and the pre-fight nerves more obvious in some than others. However the rewards for training hard were that everyone fought very well in their categories and did themselves and the club proud.

Thank you to Lee and Yaz for the "Master Class". Everyone enjoyed the training and we thank you for the opportunity to train with you and your students.

One of the hightlight of the day must surely be Jack "tag, your it!" Morley winning the Mens Advanced Points category single handedly - seriously, he had one broken hand! Well done Jack.

Wow! Talk about a close run contest for the most improved student. In the end the first place is jointly held by Lorna and Ryan. The first prize was to be a tee-shirt, but how are we to split that between you? Who wants the front half and who wants the back half?!?!?! I think a tee-shirt each is in order. Well done to you both.

However a huge well done to Mo! She is the most improved person overall with a huge 25 point increase from her last bleep test. Keep training hard Mo. Good to see you leading by example.

Looking back over the scores for the last three tests it's clear that the overall fitness of everyone taking part is improving month after month. That's really pleasing to all of the instructors and it gives us pride to know that the classes are benefitting all of you by getting you fighting fit! Well done again.

SBBA Highland 3 Series National Championship

It's time to hit the road again and head north to the SBBA 3 Series competition. It's a good competition to attend if it's your first try out for fighting as the atmosphere is friendly, the contact light and the refereeing excellent.

There is a one hour seminar being run by Master Lee Sansum at about 1:00pm for £5. Any students travelling to take part in the competition will have entry to the seminar paid for by the club. If you're travelling to spectate why not try the seminar. Lee Sansum is a top class instructor and has train British, European and World title fighters so the semiar is fantastic value for money.

Travel arrangement are to meet at Woodmill High School Community Use car park on the Sunday morning at 7:00am. We will hit the road at 7:10am and should be in Elgin for 10:00 - 10:30am depending to rest breaks and traffic. Volunteers to drive would be appreciated and a donation towards fuel costs from the passengers would be gratefully received.

We require your name and entry fee paid by Wednesday 31st October.

Remember there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. If in doubt - ask!

Todays grading was run by Lindsay and I personally think that it was one of the toughest we've held in terms of the fitness levels. Every student made us proud today with the determination and commitment to keep going and see the test through.

I must apologise personally and most wholly to Ben Mitchell for the confusion at the end of the grading which left the poor guy thinking, albeit temporarily, that he had not passed the grading. The mistake has been on my mind all day and I am very, very sorry and embarassed.

WAKO SCOTTISH OPEN

It was a very quiet attendance at this competition for Fife Kickboxing with only Ryan fighting as part of the Compete Scotland squad. The results for the squad were excellent and I'll add to this post all of the squad positions once we've received them from the guys in Elgin.

Ryan entered both the semi-contact and light continuous categories and fought extremely well in both categories. He collect 1st place in the semi-contact and 2nd place in the light continuous. Congratulations and well done Ryan.

Thank you to the small band of spectators and supporters from the classes who also came up to cheers on Ryan and the squad members. Your support is noted and very much appreciated as was the help filming the fights. Hopefully we can get more students to attend the next competition or at least come along and support the club.

FKSDA GRADING

Ladies and Gentlemen it is that time again. Fife Kickboxing hold gradings every 4 months to test the attitude, fitness and ability of students who are ready and prepared to grade.

Students must apply to grade by completing an application form and paying the grading fee. Students must have a Compete Scotland valid licence.

You are to be at the leisure centre for 11:15am in full uniform (including belt if applicable) and fully prepared with plenty water and/ or sports drinks. The instructors recommend small sugary snack or sport sweets (such as Lucozade) to help prevent nausea and "the shakes" due to the intensity of the grading.

Should you have any questions relating to the grading of your readiness to apply please speak with one of the instructors.

COMPETE SCOTLAND - ROBBIE HUGHES SEMINAR

If you didn't go to the Robbie Hughes semiar you missed a fantastic training session!! The course ran for 90 minutes and was crammed full of techniques, tips and strategies for competition fighting. Robbie Hughes was truely inspirational and you could feel the buzz of energy around the room as people trained.

EFFECTIVE SELF DEFENCE

Through FIFE KRAV MAGA we run a weekly practical and effective self defence class at Queen Anne High School, Dunfermline (Tuesdays, 8pm).
